2001: A Space Odyssey- Typographic Poster
TYPOGRAPHY/ ART DIRECTION
To challenge myself and learn a new tool, I began creating the typeface in Illustrator to meet course requirements but also explored Glyphs in my own time to make it a type-able font (a project still in progress as I focus on learning the program). I started with research, watching the movie, taking notes, and capturing screenshots of scenes and typography that stood out. I created mood boards featuring font inspiration, and past and current poster designs for the movie.
Next, I made numerous sketches, incorporating elements of Russian typography to reflect the collaboration between Russians and Americans in the film. After discussing my sketches with my professor, I selected the best concepts and created a grid in Illustrator. Starting with the letter “N” (as it could form an “M” and other characters), I systematically built all letters and numerical forms. Once complete, I received feedback, made adjustments, and finalized the typeface.
For the poster, I created multiple sketches and narrowed them down with my professor’s input. I chose two concepts to develop further, focusing on the backgrounds and typography placement. The backgrounds were designed in Photoshop, where I experimented with shapes, colored lines, radial blur, and noise filters until I achieved a result I was happy with. For the poster, I created multiple sketches and narrowed them down with my professor’s input. After choosing a final background, I refined the typography, changing the layout from vertical to horizontal to improve the composition. I adjusted the colors, added shadows, and incorporated a chrome effect into the title "2001" to make it stand out. This addition tied the design to the movie's themes, with the background representing the film's conclusion and the chrome title reflecting its beginning.
